2013 Photo books

Some of our favourite contemporary photographers released their retrospective books this year, presenting collections of the most influential fashion photography from the last two decades. We're still waiting to purchase them all, but we've got some great inspiration to look forward to in for 2014. 


Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin - Pretty Much Everything 
A two-volume retrospective set that looks back at “pretty much everything” that the photographers have been working on for over two decades.

Viviane Sassen - In and Out of Fashion
She has already put out several highly collectible books, but this one brings together 17 years of Vivianne's work in the world of fashion.

Juergen Teller - Woo!
A collages of some of his most famous image, shown this year as part of his exhibition at London's ICA.

Mario Sorrenti - Draw blood for proof
During the 90s he began covering the walls of his studio with snapshots, polaroids, and contact sheets. Years later these works were shown as a large-scale photographic installation, re-photographed they were released as his new book

Inspiration: Juergen Teller X Studio Andreas Wellnitz

These posters for Berlin's Schaubühne by the wonderful Andreas Wellnitz Studio were all over town last month. You could tell from far across the street who they were photographed by. Shot in two days at a camping site by the Tegel-Airport, which actually sits near a beautiful lake. For me, these images summarize Berlin summer perfectly.

Andreas Wellnitz is a visual editor and magazine consultant living and working in Berlin. All of his project feature beautiful photographs and interesting photo production. He also publishes a travel magazine Paradiso, of whom I am a big fan.

Inspiration: JNBY X Amira Fritz X Kathi Kauder

While looking at the work of German stylist Kathi Kauder, I came across this beautiful story she did for Chinese fashion label JNBY. Photographed by Amira Fritz following the road from Shanghai to Paris, through Mongolia, Russia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary. Beautiful mood and simple uncomplicated styling. The streetcast models are my favoutrite part...

Dawid Tomaszewski S/S 2014 Campaign

We are very happy with the results of a project that was one of our favourite shoots to date. Wonderful model, an amazing team, and simply a super atmosphere, in a grand private residence in Potsdam, Germany.

Photography in Berlin, February 2013

Berlin is an amazing place for photography, it seems like every week there is a new photo exhibition to see. We are definitely super lucky to be living here right now. Here is some work we've seen in the last month or so:


Saw the work of Swedish photographer Christer Stromholm (1918-2002) for the first time last year, at Swedish Photography. I was happy to see our favourite gallery C/O Berlin was showing a big retrospective of his in Germany for the first time. A self-declared advocate of “available light”, his grainy portraits of transsexuals are particularly lovely.

Asger Carlsen's Hester at Dittrich Schlechtriem gallery  (1 Feb 16-Mar, 2013)
Stumbled upon this just walking down a street in Mitte :) Asger Carlsen born 1973 in Denmark, and now lives and works in New York. You can read a small interview with him about this series on Vice.

 



Lovely Camille Vivier's show, Eine Form at Galerie für Moderne Fotografie (11 Jan – 9 Mar, 2013). Got another chance to see this show, as the one I originally planned on attending in Paris, was locked the day I went. Berlin's Gallery for Modern Photography is small, but always features great works.

Some really great portraiture

The team behind DerZeit Magazine put together a 2013 fashion calendar, with a launch party at Voo. The printed piece was a limited edition collectible, featuring upcoming new faces wearing German fashion designers.

 The latest exhibition we attended was last week, for the opening of Deutschland, by Gerry Johansson (b. 1945) at Swedish Photography gallery (Feb 16 - Mar 30, 2013). Germany via its suburban and rural landscapes. Simple, quiet images, with really clever composition.
